The importance of guided play in developing a child's skills

Guided play combines freedom of exploration with educational guidance toward a learning objective. Recent research suggests that guided play is as effective as, or at least as effective as, explicit instruction in areas such as language, mathematics, and certain executive function indicators. IES guidelines and curriculum reviews support its integration into early childhood programs.

Designing a Guided Play Session (60 minutes - Sample):

- 5 minutes: Setting the objective and expectations (e.g., expanding food vocabulary).

- 30 minutes: Structured play activity—specific materials and roles that promote the objective.

- 15 minutes: Sharing and reflection—naming vocabulary/emotions and solving a small problem.

- A simple homework assignment to reinforce learning.

Proven Practical Benefits:

- Improved vocabulary, collaboration, problem-solving skills, and some aspects of executive function; it also helps regulate emotions within a social context.

Integrating Guided Play in Centers and Schools:

- Training teachers/specialists to formulate precise objectives for each play session.

- Measuring impact using standardized methods (vocabulary lists, behavioral observations).
